Diving in Samar
There are a lot of dive options in the Philippines and several are now recognized by aficionados the world over. However there are still a lot to be uncovered and some of the best kept secrets are the Samar dive sites.
Blanca Aurora Falls
Diving in Samar presents several exciting possibilities for the enthusiast and one site worth checking out is the Blanca Aurora Falls.
About 28 miles away from Catbalogan, Blanca Aurora Falls offers a slew of attractions. The entire area is surrounded by vegetation, different types of plants and flowers, and the cool breeze blowing by makes it a most ideal site for diving. The currents are manageable and present no problems for divers. As you immerse yourself in the deep, beautiful and colorful fish will swim along with you in the clear blue waters.
Kantican Island
There are several islands and islets scattered around the island province, and one of the most popular is Kantican Island.
Tourists and diving enthusiasts have been drawn to this island for a number of reasons. There is of course the ease with which it can be reached (just a speedboat away from Guiuan). It is also known for being a place where pearls are cultured and last but not the least the beauty of the marine life, with wrasse, coral reefs, tuna fish, manta rays, sting rays and more moving about the deep waters.
The Basey and Sohoton National Park
The Basey and Sohoton National Park has a host of attractions and sightseeing spots including several waterfalls that make for some of the best Samar dive sites.
The waterfalls in the park are very clear and pure, and the beauty of the deep sea is breathtaking. The rocks in the bottom are awe inspiring, with the fishes, of varying sizes and colors, adding life to the scene.
Aside from being one of the most appealing Samar dive sites, the Basey and Sohoton National Park also boasts of several cliffs and caves, including the Punta Maria Caves, which are noted for being surrounded by beautiful white sands.
Calicoan Island
Although generally recognized as a haven for surfers, Calicoan Island is now earning a reputation for being one of the top Samar dive sites.
Because the waves tend to get big (emanating as it does from the Pacific Ocean), the currents in the waters can be difficult to navigate for beginners, particularly during the months of October to March. With an experienced guide you will manage though, and be rewarded by the sight of beautiful corals, nudibranch and several types of fish.
Guiuan Beach
Probably the hottest prospect among Samar dive sites today, Guiuan Island possesses several notable beaches, several of which are suitable for diving and snorkeling.
The blue waters of the sea are very pure and their brilliance adds a certain luminosity to the various rock promontories in the waters. There are also a number of coral reefs in the waters and soldier fish, frogfish and fusiliers abound.
Nasarang Falls
Nasarang Falls is only 20 miles from Catbalogan and it is definitely worth making the trip as the site makes for a fascinating dive.
The waters in Nasarang Falls are some of the purest in Samar, suitable not just for diving but also bathing and swimming. Part of the beauty of the waters are made up of striking rocks and crevices, and some beautiful plants. After the dive you can go trekking or just relax and enjoy the scenery consisting of luxuriant vegetation.
Samar has been called a province for adventurers and thrill seekers, and such is the case with its diving centers. For those that want to go snorkeling in a more exotic location, these Samar dive sites will be a most excellent choice.
